Day 1: In the Beginning…

I don’t know about you but my son was the perfect baby. He was content and probably the easiest baby I had. He slept three-four hours at a time. He nursed perfectly. He never cried when he woke up. I just got into the habit of checking him to see if he was awake.

At night, he would coo and gurgle when he was hungry. I would turn the baby monitor way up. But he was so quiet I just started taking him to bed with us. I would feel him move and know he was awake. I slept better that way.

When I changed his diaper he would calmly lay there and his eyes were ever watchful. Back and forth, back and forth, following all my moves as I cleaned him up, changed his diaper and picked him up.

As he got older he was perfectly content to sit in his rocker and watch me move about the house working and tidying up.  As I would play with his sister and brother his eyes captured all our actions and words. He absorbed everything around him. It was if he was storing up information, biding his time until he found a use for everything he observed.

He didn’t crawl but that didn’t concern me….at first. It was nice to have one less child to chase after and he seemed so peaceful watching and learning. I figured he was happy to stay put. Or it could’ve been he was such a plump baby. Maybe he was too plump to even move around? He was my little cherub: plump, rosy and angelic. The only thing missing was a pair of wings.

What was your child like as a baby? Did you have any clue what the future held for you or were you content, in the early days of his life, to just BE with your son?
